One of North Carolina's most beloved landmarks, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in the United States, standing at 208 feet from foundation to top. Built in 1870 to guide ships through the treacherous Diamond Shoals, this spiral-striped beacon has become the international symbol of North Carolina’s coast. Visitors to this site are invited to climb the tower's 248-step, iron spiral staircase and take in the breathtaking view from the top. This majestic lighthouse is located on the southern tip of Hatteras Island, just south of Buxton.
