After initial construction issues and the Civil War, the third iteration of the Bodie Island Lighthouse stands proudly to this day. First exhibiting its light in 1872, the 19-mile range light and tower remain a functioning navigational aid for the U.S. Coast Guard. The 156-foot tower itself is not open to the public, but the base of the lighthouse is available for viewing along with the museum in the nearby keeper's quarters. Located right off the Atlantic, the Bodie Island Lighthouse is just east of Roanoke Island.
