Jockey's Ridge State Park is home to the largest natural sand dune on the East Coast, covering over 420 acres and towering from between 80 and 120 feet high. The local landscape and high winds make it an ideal area to hang-glide, sand-board and fly kites. The visitor's center houses a small museum which details the barren dunes and surrounding animal and plant life, fascinating for their ability to survive in an incredibly harsh ecosystem. Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Roanoke Sound as part of the Outer Banks chain of islands, the park is slightly north of Nags Head.
